Yesaya 49:4

I have expended my energy for absolutely nothing.” 5

But the Lord will vindicate me;

my God will reward me. 6

Yesaya 61:10

61:10 I 7  will greatly rejoice 8  in the Lord;

I will be overjoyed because of my God. 9

For he clothes me in garments of deliverance;

I look like a bridegroom when he wears a turban as a priest would;

I look like a bride when she puts on her jewelry. 11

[25:1]  1 sn The prophet speaks here as one who has observed the coming judgment of the proud.

[25:1]  2 tn Heb “name.” See the note at 24:15.

[25:1]  3 tn Heb “plans from long ago [in] faithfulness, trustworthiness.” The feminine noun אֱמוּנָה (’emunah, “faithfulness”) and masculine noun אֹמֶן (’omen, “trustworthiness”), both of which are derived from the root אָמַן (’aman), are juxtaposed to emphasize the basic idea conveyed by the synonyms. Here they describe the absolute reliability of the divine plans.

[49:4]  4 tn Or “said” (KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NLT “I replied.”

[49:4]  5 tn Heb “for nothing and emptiness.” Synonyms are combined to emphasize the common idea.

[49:4]  6 tn Heb “But my justice is with the Lord, and my reward [or “wage”] with my God.”

[61:10]  7 sn The speaker in vv. 10-11 is not identified, but it is likely that the personified nation (or perhaps Zion) responds here to the Lord’s promise of restoration.

[61:10]  8 tn The infinitive absolute appears before the finite verb for emphasis.

[61:10]  9 tn Heb “my being is happy in my God”; NAB “in my God is the joy of my soul.”

[61:10]  10 tn Heb “robe of vindication”; KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV “robe of righteousness.”

[61:10]  11 tn Heb “like a bridegroom [who] acts like a priest [by wearing] a turban, and like a bride [who] wears her jewelry.” The words “I look” are supplied for stylistic reasons and clarification.
